Ella "Baby" Pictures

Cold and snowy on the weekend means limited opportunities to take photos. To that end, I've decided to start digging up some older photos. I'll start with some of the earliest photos we have of Ella.

A little over a week old.

Battle of the Bed

On Monday I was stomach sick and stayed home from work. Our power went out in the morning, so I had a good excuse to invite the dogs up on the bed with me.

Little did I know that I would start an all out war.

Ella, ever the instigator, got things started.

Roland mounted a counterattack...

... but Ella was quick to squash it.

Eventually our combatants started to tire, clutching and grabbing like boxers.

Ella basked in her victory - or maybe it was the sunlight.

One important note: no animals were harmed in any way in the creation of this blog post! Roland looks like a lunatic in the one picture where he's mouthing Ella, but neither dog did any harm to the other, and I was ready to step in if either dog got too rough. For what it's worth, if one dog takes it too far, it's usually Ella!

Roland's Ears

A few random pics of Roland from the last few weeks, with a little explanation.

When you think of the iconic Doberman look, with the ears on full alert, some people don't realize that Dobermans aren't born that way. We've spent the last few months regularly posting Roland's ears - basically inserting a piece of soft foam and then wrapping tape around the ear to hold it in place. It looks as if we've bandaged his ears - that's not the case at all, despite all of the comments we get from people telling us it's a sin, we're cruel, etc. It's painless to the dog, but he does look a little goofy. Once the Doberman is finished teething, his ears will generally stand reliably. Roland is just about done.

In the last pic, you'll notice Roland's left ear has a little but of a curve - we're hoping that with a couple more postings, both ears will be straight in the perfect Doberman look, and we can stop posting once and for all.

The 4th pic was taken the day my brother, Gerry, arrived in town. Within a couple of hours of his arrival, Roland was sleeping in Gerry's lap.

Post-Christmas Hangover

One of the reasons we've had a slow start to this year in terms of new posts is because I've been busy with work.  Another is because snowed all last weekend, and I was paranoid about bringing my camera out in the snow.  But the biggest was perhaps that we had a big family visit over the Christmas break, which meant little time for blog posts.

We had a great Christmas break, but it was busy and went by quickly.  And when all was said and done, everyone was beat.

Ella the Chilly Dog

The general rule of thumb for Boston Terriers is that they're just as cold as you are.  If you need a sweater, they need a sweater.  If you need a parka, they need a parka.

To that end, last fall, in preparation for Ella's first winter, we got her a jacket.  We were in NYC and visited the awesome Trixie + Peanut, where we got Ella a pink parka that she put to great use last winter.

She might not look happy, but she was sure glad to have it last winter's cold.

As a dog hits maturity, it typically adds a little weight.  Ella reached 18 months of age, which is about the age when a dog reaches maturity, last Friday.  Her pink parka no longer fit.

After a quick trip to Wag, one of Ottawa's great pet stores, we were able to find Ella a Great White North Winter Coat from Chilly Dogs, a great local business that makes practical clothing for dogs.

Here are a few shots of Ella modeling her new coat.

Roland is using a loaner coat for this winter, until he reaches maturity next January.  We'll definitely be looking to get him his own Chilly Dogs coat at that time.
